3D Printed Ceramic Installation for the London Natural History Museum

WASP Hub LAMÁQUINA created a unique 3D printed ceramic installation on the occasion of the exhibition Fixing Our Broken Planet.

The design was systematised into ten modules, used in various combinations to suit the exhibition’s content. The fully modular system was dry-assembled using biopolymer joints, preserving the integrity of the heritage site.

The modules were created using WASP’s clay 3D printing extrusion technology, both with a Robotic Arm and through the WASP 40100 Production.

In just three months, LAMÁQUINA engineered and produced 1,686 modular clay components using 3d printing and 40% recycled material.

Robotic arm with WASP extruder precision ensured each one of the components was shaped as needed, integrating all technical requirements, including perforations for cables and signage.

The different modules were created also through the use of WASP 40100 Production System, enabling 24/7 printing thanks to its automatic idle roller.

Why 3D printed Ceramics for a heritage site?

Robotic ceramic printing, led by LAMÁQUINA, was used to meet all design requirements while adhering to the conservation constraints of the building.

One key strategy is the use of 3D printing ceramics for display cases, which enabled meeting all the demands of the new gallery while respecting the stringent measures of working in a heritage site without interfering with the original architecture.

Particular consideration was given to the environmental impact of the intervention while maintaining both design integrity and long-term durability. The findings supported the use of 3d printed ceramic pieces as the most sustainable option.

With Fixing Our Broken Planet exhibition, the Museum exemplifies how innovation and sustainability can coexist within a heritage context, setting a benchmark for future exhibitions.
