The first 3D printed building for airport services in Italy

Within the Logistics Park of Milan Bergamo Airport, “Ol Casél” comes to life: the first airport service building in Italy constructed using 3D printing. A project developed within a highly regulated environment and compliant with the highest regulatory standards, publicly validated and designed to ensure safety, reliability, and structural integrity.

A 3D printed utility building and restroom area

Ol Casél was conceived as a service module and relax area equipped with restrooms for personnel in the customs area of Milan Bergamo Airport. The initiative is promoted by EDILCO Srl, in collaboration with SACBO S.p.A. (airport operator) and WASP, as the technical enabler of the project.

The project was completed in record time, with only 7 days of printing and 19 days in total for the delivery of the building, demonstrating the speed and versatility of 3D printing technology in the construction sector.

3D construction for fast and sustainable building solutions

Ol Casél was created using Crane WASP, the modular, 3D printing system that reimagines traditional building cranes through the lens of digital manufacturing. Designed to print both natural and traditional construction materials, the machine is now a commercialized product, making it the first Italian architectural 3D printer marketed globally.

The building’s structure combines 3D-printed elements with traditional construction. The walls are fully 3D-printed, while windows, doors, and the roof were added after printing. The two methods are fully integrated: the 3D printing process is designed to include spaces for wiring and openings, avoiding extra work like drilling after printing.

A fast and sustainable construction approach

The building’s walls were printed using a lime-based mixture, which produces lower carbon emissions than traditional cement while still meeting the high-performance standards required by the airport.

Completed in December 2025 after just a few months of development, Ol Casél is a prime example of how 3D printing can enable the rapid creation of buildings while allowing full customization of shapes, aesthetics, and materials.
