3D Printing for Coral Reef Restoration
At the European research project 3DPARE, we collaborated with WASP 3MT LDM Concrete thanks to Gianluca Pugliese from LowPoly (official distributor of WASP in Spain and a certain one of the most expert in the additive manufacturing field from our community), applying 3D printing to create artificial reefs. This initiative directly contributes to coral reef restoration, demonstrating how technology can aid environmental conservation.

Giteco, Artificial Reef 3D Printing in the Atlantic
The research group Giteco at the University of Cantabria immersed a series of 3D-printed artificial reefs along the coasts of the UK, France, Portugal, and Spain. These structures are designed to study the best approaches for regenerating marine life and supporting coral reef restoration efforts.

How to 3D Print Coral Reefs for Restoration
3D printing coral reefs requires a 3D file (.stl) and proper slicing techniques. The project utilized concrete with sinuous structures, while experimenting with sand supports and manual filling. Other approaches include clay or geopolymers, which also promote coral reef restoration by creating durable habitats for marine life.
Enhancing Endangered Reefs with 3D Printing
By immersing different shapes of 3D-printed structures, researchers assess which forms best attract flora and fauna. These objects provide critical support to endangered reefs and actively contribute to global coral reef restoration initiatives.
Here the different coral reef immersed:
Creating New Marine Habitats and Supporting Coral Reef Restoration
In Santander Bay, free diving among artificial reefs shows octopuses and algae thriving on 3D-printed structures. These results illustrate how 3D printing not only protects marine biodiversity but also accelerates coral reef restoration worldwide.
WASP 3D Printers for Coral Reef
The Delta WASP 3MT CONCRETE is our flagship printer for large-scale projects. Equipped with a continuous feeding system, it is specifically designed to print sizable structures, including artificial reefs that actively support coral reef restoration efforts. This printer can achieve a maximum height of one meter, and for larger projects, the The maximum height you can reach is one meter tall; if you need to print something bigger, Crane WASP can be equipped with the same extrusion system to accommodate even bigger prints, ensuring scalable solutions for marine ecosystem restoration.
